What to do in a dental emergency
Evaluate your child
If your child experiences a dental injury, it is important to first check for any signs of a concussion or head injury—including loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or unusual behavior. If your child experiences any of these signs or symptoms, we recommend bringing them to the ER for further evaluation.
Try to control bleeding and take steps to reduce swelling and pain
Have your child bite on a gauze or paper towel to control bleeding. Tylenol and Motrin can be helpful to alleviate any pain following an injury.
Stay calm and call us
Children take their cues from parents – staying calm helps them feel safe. Call our office right away to explain the situation. We’ll let you know if your child needs to be seen immediately and give instructions to manage pain or bleeding at home.
Visit our office for an evaluation
Same-day appointments are often available, so your family gets the help without delay. Please note for same-day evaluation, there may be a minimal wait for a thorough evaluation.

Toothaches
Persistent tooth pain may signal decay or infection that requires treatment. We provide gentle exams, take X-rays if needed, and offer fast relief to ease your child’s discomfort. For discomfort, we recommend eating soft foods and avoiding anything spicy/acidic/crunchy that may exacerbate your child's symptoms. For pain relief, we recommend alternating between Tylenol and Motrin every 4-6 hours.
Broken or chipped teeth
Active kids are prone to falls and bumps that can crack or chip teeth. We use conservative restorative solutions like fillings and crowns to protect the tooth and restore function.
Knocked-out teeth
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not attempt to reinsert it, as this can damage the developing adult tooth—contact our office for guidance.
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to gently place it back in the socket as soon as possible or keep it in milk or saliva and seek emergency dental care immediately.
Most importantly, stay calm—children take emotional cues from their parents, and your reassurance helps them feel safe while we guide the next steps.
Swelling or infection
If your child has swelling or signs of infection, please call our office right away so we can provide guidance and determine next steps. Swelling involving the eye, or any difficulty breathing or swallowing, requires immediate evaluation in the Emergency Department. When speaking with our team or another provider, be sure to share any medication allergies, including penicillin.
Sports or accident injuries
From a ball to the face to a playground fall, dental injuries can be scary. We treat trauma with gentle, effective solutions that help kids heal quickly and return to their favorite activities.
